Vancouver’s streamline moderne buildings include a few gems. Exploring south of King Edward and Cambie, with John Atkin, I first met this one (above) at W 27th and Heather — and my freehand sketch fails to do it justice. It has original slim wood window panes. It sits in a perfect garden setting (right and below), with trees sculpted to set off the lines of the building.
And that reminded me to go and draw another moderne building on W. Broadway Ave. (below), which sits well above the road.In summer it is lost amid the dense foliage of large trees, which I have omitted. The garden, perhaps once planted with sculpted bushes now has a rag-tangle look with rogue ferns.
