The “why” of my painting

theme: medieval birds set in a variety of leaves

Setting aside my heritage drawings, I now concentrate on researching medieval (and earlier) bird designs in illustrated manuscripts, pottery, and textiles. As an art student in London, I researched in the Victoria & Albert Museum and find myself drawn there. The often humourous, unique early designs captivated me I drew medieval bench ends in East Anglian churches and I cannot resist the way they continue to inspire me.

I work in water media: acrylic, watercolour and inks
When sketching in museums, churches and historic places, I mostly use a ball point pen – very non-archival but rolls smoothly. Colours are remembered in notes or occasional use of Prisma colour pencils.
